Over the years, the dental community has developed several ways to help replace missing teeth and restore smiles. In recent years, however, a new and innovative restoration treatment has appeared, and it is the most preferred method of replacing missing teeth. Dental implants are a dental restoration designed to replace both the tooth’s crown and root, resulting in longer-lasting restorations and preventing bone loss that often accompanies tooth loss.
Dental implants consist of a titanium screw, called a post, that is inserted into the jaw bone and replaces the tooth’s natural roots. The procedure for inserting this implant post does require surgery, but it is a minor procedure. After the implant post is inserted and has had time to integrate with your natural bone, our dentists can create a customized, natural-looking restoration, such as a crown or bridge, that will be securely and permanently attached to the top of your implant post. As a result, you have a completely natural-looking restoration that truly feels, looks and functions like your natural tooth.
Process of Getting a Dental Implant
Receiving a dental implant is a surgical procedure, during which Dr. Llavona or Dr. Oliver will carefully and strategically place the implant post into your jaw bone in the space created by your missing tooth. After a healing period of a few months, our team will place your permanent crown or bridge.
Tooth Replacement Options With Dental Implants
Dental implants can be used in a variety of treatments, and they can be used to replace a single missing tooth or several missing teeth. For a single missing tooth, the implant post will be inserted in the space created by the missing tooth. If you are looking to replace several missing teeth in a row, our dentists can insert a dental implant on either end of the gap. A dental bridge can then be attached to the implants to create a complete restoration. For patients who have lost all of the teeth in one or both of their dental arches, dental implants can be used to support dentures and replace all of your missing teeth. A common treatment for replacing a full dental arch is the All-On-4® dental implant system.
Caring For Your Dental Implant
Dental implants are designed to last a lifetime as long as they are properly cared for. Once your dental implant treatment is complete, simply care for your implant as you would your natural tooth. This includes brushing your teeth and implant at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day. You will also need to continue to keep your regular visits to our dental practice. If you grind or clench your teeth, our dentists may provide a night guard to help protect your teeth and implant from excessive bite force.
Our dentist can help you know of any specific dental hygiene habits you may need to incorporate to care for your implant. If you would like to learn more about how dental implants can restore your missing teeth, we invite you to contact our practice and talk with our friendly team.
